Why do I hate AI?
The answers to humanity's problems will always come from more human connection, not less.
Water Use
As fresh water become increasingly scarce, it just seems so obvious to me that we should be keeping water for humans, not data centres...!
Land Use
Prime commercial real estate, arable lands, and ecologically sensitive areas are all being used to build data centres. Often close to residential areas, causing significant disruption to human populations. Other times in more rural settings, where the light and noise pollution disrupt local wildliife habits. Living creatures do not want to live near data centres, wild or domestic.
Electricity Use
Data centres require vast amounts of power, straining local grids and increasing fossil fuel emissions in communities that still rely on coal-generated power. In a time of energy crisis, why are we intentionally creating a society that requires more of what we do not have (human-generated power) and less of what we get for free - our very own brains!?
Facism
Greedy, power-hungry politicians know that the quickest way to gain/keep power is to dumb-down the masses. The brain is just like any other muscle - use it or lose it. Nothing could be better for the rise of Facism than a herd of AI-reliant dumb-dumbs.
Human Ingenuity
Widespread use of AI will diminish humanity's ability to innovate, reducing the number of people who are able to think creatively [and find solutions to our many and sundry problems]. AI is trained on what we've already done - it is not capable of new ideas. Relying on AI locks us in to a self-repeating loop.
Job Losses
People are losing jobs to bolster profits. Where does it end? As AI takes over more and more jobs, what is the plan by governments (like Carney's) which are aggressively pushing AI to feed/house people whose skill set has been outsourced to a water-guzzling machine? I have no doubt that AI is being used in fashion design by large corps - why pay a designer to spend weeks carefully crafting a collection when AI can "generate" it in 20 minutes? If AI is allowed to continue to grow unchecked, there will be a tidal wave of unemployed people in tech and creative industries. The only jobs left will be in [data centre] construction and warehouse fulfillment...
Customer Service
Trying to get answers to complex problems from AI is a horrendous experience - when my bank card is frozen due to unusual activity, I want to talk to a human to get it resolved! Disappearing customer service creates day-to-day frustrations - the big corps save money and we foot the bill in higher stress levels, time wasted and lost sleep.
War
It has been well-documented that militaries are now using AI to kill people. See: Terminator 2. Also the other 1000s of sci-fi episodes and movies about what happens when humans hand control to AI.
Human Needs
Humans have an inherent need to create and achieve. We all know the sense of satisfaction we derive from doing something well, and we've all seen how unhappy someone is when they are unable to find a way to generate that feeling for themself as part of their lifestyle. AI cannot generate the feeling of a job well done. Humans are also always looking for the easiest most efficient way to do things - this is an evolutionary instinct - making AI a very easy sell for most human brains. We must balance these two things - the current AI-integration trajectory will drastically undersupport humans' inherent need for a sense of accomplishment.
Human Community Building
As humans use AI for more and more tasks, our reliance on friends and neighbours will continue to decrease. We should be relying on each other - for help with things we don't know how to do, advice on life and when we're lonely. Who's going to pick me up when my car breaks down if my best friend is ChatGPT?
Human Neuroplasticity
When I started my business, I had to learn how to do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) because I couldn't afford to pay someone to do it for me (this was pre-AI). It was hell, but it was undeniably good for my brain and character. I also learned how to do graphic design and whereas I still struggle to get it done (it's not in line with my natural inclination), I feel great satisfaction when it turns out well and you all stop to admire my artwork printed on my clothes. Being forced to learn new things is an essential part of the human experience, and AI wants to take that away from us. This will result in brittle humans who are unable do hard things.
It's Theft
AI has been trained on the entire body of human output, and much of that is not in the public domain. The books, music and art that AI has been trained on are materials normally protected by copyright - a human is not allowed to resell that content without the artist's permission, but for some reason a machine is?! A few years ago the Hollywood actors went strike and one of the key issues was AI - actors were expected to sign away their likeness so that after one paid job, their physical parameters can be reused by AI to make more content without paying them again.
The way AI models have been trained is piracy, plain and simple. Stop using it!
